Penn Field Mixed-Use

Austin, TX

Originally built in 1918 as an Army Air Base on Austin's south side, Penn Field is now home to an innovative mixed-use complex occupied by a variety of commercial enterprises. The award-winning adaptive re-use project led by Antenora Architects encompasses a century's worth of historic building fabric that still echoes the bygone times of the de-commissioned military installation.

The renovation strategy – which required select deconstruction of some components and careful insertion of new structures – blends modern and vintage materials to create an architecturally rich campus for a variety of businesses and office spaces while honoring the aeronautical legacy of the site. In some cases, existing building envelopes were manipulated to expose antique structural elements and expand the amount of interior space. Additionally, the design team employed a diverse array of the construction types that include wood frame, load-bearing masonry, and pre-engineered metal structures.

The end product represents a new, vibrant mixed-use commercial complex in the SOCO neighborhood of South Austin.
